FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions Link Checked
Do I Have To Go Through Pulse To Access The Library?

The Library’s Home Page is: http://www.iuhealthlib.org. This address can be accessed anywhere in the world. However, to have access to library resources off campus you must use the Library’s Athens System to have access to the Library’s resources. This system is available from http://www.iuhealthlib.org

How Do I Access The Library From Home?

The library uses a system called "Athens" to provide access to resources when you are not at an IU Health location. This system is available 24/7 and can be access from any Internet device anywhere in the world.  Complete information about Athens can be found at: http://www.iuhealthlib.org/athenstutorials.htm . Please note the following when registering for an Athens account:

  • The MIR location name is short for "Methodist, IU, Riley"
  • You must register ON-SITE from a SECURE hospital computer (DO NOT USE the IU Health Public Network accessible by Patients)
  • You must supply a valid e-mail address to receive your username and password. Please use your hospital or health network-based e-mail address whenever possible.
  • YOU WILL RECEIVE AN E-MAIL to confirm your registration. YOU MUST REPLY TO THAT WITHIN 48 HRS FOR YOUR ACCOUNT TO BECOME ACTIVE. If you do not receive an email, check your email's "Junk Folder".
  • You must re-register annually
  • If you have problems please contact: sostergren@iuhealth.org

Where Can I Find CE/CME?

The Library maintains a list of CME sites on the Web at: http://www.iuhealthlib.org/cme_links.htm,  This link is available from the Library's Home Page under the Library Services Topic Pages. Most of the sites listed offer free CME. Library Databases, which offer CME are: DynaMed, MD Consult, Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, Natural Standard, Nursing Consult and Up to Date. CE from Nursing Reference Center is available at Ball/Blackford and Bloomington/Paoli Hospitals. Full-text links to the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology mandatory CME is available at: http://iuhealthlib.org/acog.htm.

How Do I Access CME From "Up to Date"?

To use the CME feature from Up to Date you must have a personal account and be logged into that account to acquire CME. Currently there are two ways to create a personal account. When you access IU Health's subscription to Up to Date from either the Medical Record or the Library's Athens System you will be asked to fill out a short registration form the first time you open Up to Date from these two access points. You will receive a confirmation e-mail from Up to Date providing you a User ID and a link that will take you to a page where you will create yourself a password. The next time you open Up to Date from either of these systems you will automatically be logged into your personal account.

  • PLEASE NOTE: You cannot use the ID/PW from one system to log into another system. You will always have two separate ID/PW's from Up to Date, because of this, you will initially have two CME accounts. Up to Date has created a process that will allow the 2 CME accounts to dump into one "bucket", thus creating one location for tracking CME but you must manually complete this process. A link to instructions for merging CME can be found at: http://www.iuhealthlib.org/athenstutorials.htm.
  • As stated above: You cannot use the ID/PW from one system to log into another system. However, if you open Up to Date from a generic link such as those located under Pulse's, "Medical Reference Tools" or other Intranet Web page, the ID/PW you created the first time you logged to Up to Date from the Library's Athens System, can be used to open your personal account. For this reason, we suggest you change your Up to Date, ID/PW from Athens, to something you can remember. A step by step PowerPoint is available at: http://iuhealthlib.org/pp/athensutd.ppt.

How Do I Determine What Resources Are Available From The Library?
The library has two types of resources. Those physically located on a shelf such as paper journals or books and the electronic resources paid for by the library but available via the Web. The Card Catalog can be used to located what is physically available in the library. The A-Z Lists are used to see what is available electronically. Links to the Card catalog and the A-Z Lists are found on the Library's Home page, http://www.iuhealthlib.org.
  • The Online Card Catalog provides information about the resources physically located in the libraries at Ball, LaPorte and Methodist Hospitals. Ball and Methodist Hospital Libraries are willing to share the "shelf" paper resources with all IU Health locations. If you wish to borrow from the two sharing locations, please contact either Lorna Springston at Ball Hospital (lspringston@iuhealth.org) or Trena Lowery at Methodist Hospital (tlowery@iuhealth.org) to make arrangements.
  • To see what is available via the library's paid Web subscriptions open the A-Z List that is indicated for your location. The easiest way to locate a specific title is to type a few keywords of the title into the Search Box this will create just a listing of titles that contain just those words. Once you select a title, the available date range for that title will be indicated. The A-Z List is handy if you already know a specific journal title and article you wish to find or to locate a full-text e-book.

What Does “EMBARGO” Mean Next To A Link On The "A-Z List"?
When an embargo time (usually 6 to 18 months) is indicated next to a date range for a specific title it is indicating a delay period for access to full-text. For instance, the "AJR, American Journal of Roentgenology" is available via a source called "EBSCO Open Access Journals" with a date range listed as: "1976 to present (Embargo: 1 year)". This means that there is a one year delay in the available full-text for this journal. For example, the current year and month is May 2012. The full-text available to you is, January 1976 through April 2011. Full-text from May 2011-May 2012 is not available as there is an "embargo" or delay of one year.

How Do I Look Up An Article?

This question addresses two scenarios:
  • You want a specific article: If you want a specific article and know what journal and issue it is from, the easiest path is to check your A-Z List to see if the full-text is available to you electronically. If the title is listed on the A-Z List but the date range is not available, click on the "Card Catalog" icon to the right of the title to see if it is available on the shelf. If the title is not available in the Card catalog or A-Z List, you may request a copy of that article via Interlibrary Loan.
  • You want information about a topic but do not have a specific article in mind: In this instance you will want to perform a literature search to find information about the topic. Searching databases such as Ovid, EBSCO, Nursing Index, and Medline will find information about that topic and suggest articles that may be of interest. Using the Library pages to access these databases will allow your selected database to query the IU Health A-Z Lists to see if full-text for the found article is available. Bypassing the Library Home Page and going direct to PubMed or Google Scholar, will greatly diminish your full-text access.

How Do I Perform a Database Search?

There are several things you should be aware of when using a Medical Database as apposed to a general search engine such as Google.
  • A Medical Database is a list of articles that pertain to a specific topic. When content is submitted for inclusion to a medical database, that content is assigned specific topics or Subject Headings. Medical Databases use those Subject Headings to find relevant information. Typing in titles of articles, concepts or words as you would with a general search engine, may or may not return the results you are looking for. When searching Medical Databases always use specifically assigned "Subject Headings". Each database defines what subject headings it assigned to a topic many topics are shared by multiple databases however, a database that addresses a specific profession such as nursing may also have subjects not considered by other databases.
  • Pediatric is a specific subject heading. When you try to limit a search to a specific age of a child, DO NOT use the term, pediatric(s). Using the term pediatric(s) performs a search about the medical specialty of pediatrics not a specific age group. To limit a search to a specific age, use the advanced search capability in the search engine you can limit by age via a drop-down box listing specific age ranges.
  • Most search engines including Google allow the use of "wild cards". A wildcard is a character that may be used in a search term to represent one or more other characters. The most commonly used wildcard is an asterisk, the (“*”) may be used to specify zero or more alphanumeric characters. For example, searching for the term “cardio*” would yield results which contain such words as “cardiology”, “cardiovascular”, “cardiomyopathy”, or any word starting with cardio. Each database defines what wildcards it will allow to be used in a search, the allowed wildcards will be defined under the "Help" pages for that database.

Who Do I Contact If I Need Help Searching A Topic?
Two Drop-down Boxes on the Library's Home page, http://www.iuhealthlib.org,  named “Ask a Librarian” and “Request a Topic Search”, will open a form for you to send your request to the appropriate librarian. The librarian will be happy to perform a topic search for you or set up time to personally assist you with search strategy. Lorna Springston, the Librarian from Ball Memorial will assist those individuals from Arnett, Ball, Blackford, Goshen, LaPorte, Starke, Tipton and White Hospitals. Chris Bockrath from Methodist Hospital will assist those individuals from Bedford, Bloomington, Methodist, IU, Riley, Morgan, North, Paoli, Saxony and West Hospitals. Contact information can be found at: http://iuhealthlib.org/LibStaff.htm.

Why Am I Being Asked to Pay For An Article When I Click On PDF Or Full-text At The Publisher's Site?
  • The library has not purchased access for your institution to that specific title and or date range of that title.
Remedy: Check Your A-Z List to see if you should have access and what dates your access covers.
  • You are not using an IU Health Computer.
Remedy: Sign up for Athens for access via Non- IU Health computers
  • You are signed in via Athens and you still cannot access a specific article. Note: Many Publishers and Vendors use Athens for authentication just because a publishers accepts Athens, it does not mean that the library has purchased a subscription for the content you want.
Remedy: Check Your A-Z List to see if you should have access and what dates your access covers.
  • Changes in subscriptions can cause changes in access rights.
Remedy: Check Your A-Z List to see if you should have access and what dates your access covers.
  • The A-Z List indicates I should have access
Remedy: Fill out the "Report a Problem" form located on the Library's Home Page.

Who Do I Contact If I Need A Document That I Do Not Have Access To?

You can request articles and books that are not in your collection by the "Request an Article" box on the Library's Home Page.
Ball Memorial will fill requests from Arnett, Ball, Blackford, Goshen, LaPorte, Starke, Tipton and White Hospitals. Methodist Hospital will fill requests from Bedford, Methodist, IU, Riley, Morgan, North, Saxony and West Hospitals using the Illiad system. Patty Booker will fill requests for Bloomington and Paoli Hospitals. There is no charge to IU Health Associates for this service.

How Do I Use Illiad For Document Delivery?
Individuals from Bedford, Methodist, IU, Riley, Morgan, North, Saxony and West Hospitals should use the Illiad system for document delivery. The Illiad Application automatically opens when you select your location under "Request an Article" on the Library's Home Page. If you have never used the Illiad System before, click on first time users located under the Log In box. Fill out the registration form to create a personal account. When entering your email address please use your company e-mail address during registration, as this is an open resource. Your e-mail address identifies you as an IU Health Associate.

What Full-text Text-books Are Available Online?
There are over 200 available e-books covering all aspects of medicine. You can view the list of available titles under “Online Books” on the Library Home Page. Multiple books may be searched at once from the Access Medicine, MD Consult, NetLibrary, Nursing Consult, Ovid and StatRef. Harrison’s Online is located in the Access Medicine database.

Where Can I Obtain Patient Education?
You can view the list of these resources under "Patient Education” on the Library Home Page. Patient Education from MD Consult, and Nursing Consult can be customized with the patient’s name and instructions. Once you find your patient education handout, select “print preview,” and then scroll to the bottom and type in any “special instructions.” Spanish versions are also available.

Where Can I Find Images For Presentations?
Many of the Library’s Databases allow usage of pictures for Presentations and Patient Handouts, providing they are not used in a “for-profit” manner. The Library has created a list of possible image sources, which can be viewed from the Library Home Page under “Picture/Image Sources”. Note: Most of the sites listed, provide free access to medical images for educational purposes; however, you should always refer to the copyright statements of a site before using any images.

What Mobile Products Are Available From The Medical Library?
